Description
Ptarmigan 15′ catamaran – Easy Build, Stable & Adventure-Ready
Designed for simplicity and versatility, this 15’ Catboat is perfect for sailors who want an easy-to-build wooden boat that’s stable, practical, and fun to sail. Created as an English version of the traditional catboat, she retains the catboat’s renowned stability while offering a slightly narrower beam for efficient performance on rivers, estuaries, and sheltered waters like the Blackwater.
Construction is straightforward thanks to stitch-and-epoxy methods. With just 12 sheets of 3/8’’ and one sheet of 1/2’’ plywood, you can build a strong, adaptable boat without complex joinery. Inside, you’ll find space for two simple berths and camp cooking, making her ideal for overnight trips and weekend adventures.
This design is flexible too:
-
Wide side decks (or choose maximum cabin width with no side decks)
-
Centreboard version, or build with a fixed ballast keel and bilge plates
-
Yawl rig option included in the plans
-
Alternative 14’ x 5’ motor boat version available
Despite her compact size, the 15’ Catboat delivers comfort and capability. She can be left on a mooring, easily trailed when needed, and offers stability that inspires confidence for new and seasoned sailors alike.
