The Dart 22 blends proven design with easy construction. It’s perfect for paddlers who want both comfort and performance on longer trips. Inspired by the Dart 16 hull, it has a strong ‘tortured ply U-shaped’ bottom. This smoothly changes into a full ‘V’ bow. The result is great buoyancy and a clean, efficient water entry.
Above the shaped bottom are soft chines and flat topsides. This gives the kayak a sleek, stylish look. It also makes building easier, without losing stability. A clever feature is the square-section chine stringer. It’s filled with an epoxy fillet to close the ‘V’ gap. This removes the need for tricky beveling and speeds up your build.
Safety and storage are priorities. Large buoyancy compartments sit at the bow, stern, and center. Each has a watertight hatch. These keep your gear dry on multi-day trips.
The Dart 22 requires only 6 to 7 sheets of 4mm exterior plywood. It’s a manageable project that brings big rewards. The plans also include detailed rudder designs. These improve steering and control in open water.
